I heard Amos Oz, a Israeli author, on NPR and he was talking about the reality for the people on the ground - both Palestinian and Israeli - being much more pragmatic than you would think by the actions of both Hamas and the Israeli government, and that everybody realizes that the solution is going to be a the creation of a Palestinian state. If that is the case then I think that is a great sign that their might actually be a solution to the oldest established conflict in the world (because if you want to get Biblical -- this won't end well...).

I just think it's unfortunate that the US has to side with Israel, all the time. Politics!

Yes, good point. It is an interesting fine line we walk: purely killing for the sake of killing is a sin according to the Bible and killing for the sake of one's country is patriotic.
Resources yes, ahem, OIL. But modern war has warped into an all too ugly beast. We are caught up in this deadly war-industrial machine fueled by politics. Look at the Israeli-Gaza mess right now. Israel is shooting because Hamas is terrorizing; Hamas is shooting because Israel is the terrorist.
And I'm upset that President-Elect Obama has been all too quiet about this. The US-Israel relationship is one I'm not proud of- at all.

I tend to think that the bottom line of war is all about resources, even when governments trumpet reasons that are meant only to rally the public (think WMD's). It's probably rooted in some survival-of-the-fittest vestige from days when my clan and your clan fought over the last watering hole in the jungle. If soldiers today subconsciously dehumanize their opponents as a coping mechanism (which I cannot attest to having never been a soldier) then I'd think that that would be evidence of some sort of dichotomy between the societal recognition that killing/war is wrong and the very human urge to fight for what is/should be yours (resources).
